Viewing speed limits, bus lanes and cycle lanes with Ordnance Survey NGD
Road Speed Limits
The Road Speed Limit data from the OS National Geographic Database can be found in the "Ordnance Survey NGD" collection. You can also search for it in the Layer Control.
Each section of road is styled to represent the speed limit, with the following colours:
Note that some minor or access-restricted roads have been hidden from this dataset as they are typically set as National Speed Limit. This makes a caravan park look like a motorway, so we deemed it not useful!
Each section of road can be clicked to expose more information in the Info Click panel. This includes:
- Indicative Speed limit in mph and kph
- Road name and number
- Average speed at different times of the day, and weekday versus weekend
Note that these average speed datasets are for initial analysis only and don't replace a focused speed survey as part of a new traffic scheme.
If you spot any errors, please contact Ordnance Survey directly as we take regular updates from them, so corrections will feed through to your account.
Bus Lanes
This dataset shows the location of dedicated bus lanes. At small scale (zoomed out) they are represented as standard width lines, but at larger scales (zoomed in) the lines are adjusted so they represent the true width of the bus lane.
Each section of bus lane can be clicked to show additional information, including;
- Description of segregation
- Lane width
The layer has one single style.
Cycle Lanes
The cycle lanes data shows protected and unprotected cycle lanes. At small scales (zoomed out) they are represented as blue lines of equal width, at larger scales (zoomed in), the lines show their true width and are graded by how segregated they are to other traffic (e.g. darker blue are segregated, lighter blue are less so).
When Info Clicking on a section you'll get information including:
- Description of segregation
- Cycle lane width in metres
The styling is more complex for this layer to better represent the different types of cycle lanes.
