Can I change my GOV.UK domain name?
It is possible to apply to the Government Digital Service to change your domain name. This can be for a range of reasons including;
- Domain name is considered too long, or,
- Organisation name has changed.
Things to consider:
- We charge £250 ex vat for this process
- You can't have two domain names, so if the new one is accepted you can no longer use the old one. This may confuse people who visit your site or have got used to your email address.
The process would be:
- Contact Parish Online with the new domain name you'd like. This must meet the GDS name requirements;
- If it's an acronym then it must be an established one that's been used for a long time.
- It must include either "parishcouncil", "parish" or "-pc" (note the hyphen).
- Parish Online will charge £250 ex vat to start this process as it can be lengthy administrative process. We charge this up-front.
- We will apply for the domain and request for the old domain to be decommissioned.
- Once accepted, we will convert your website/email system over to the new GOV.UK domain.
- You should then inform everyone of the change.
