Displaying a Legend (Key) for your Map Layer

Displaying a Legend (Key) for your Map Layer

Overview

A Legend (or Key) is representation of the styling that you'll find in the map, so is useful for the reader of the map to see what icons, lines and areas mean.

Whenever you create a new Map Layer in your account, the software will automatically generate a Legend for it.

Viewing the Legend

To view the Map Legend:
  1. Click VIEW in the top menu bar
  2. Click LEGEND
This will change the left-hand side panel to the Legend view.

To close the Legend tool, click the X button to the right of the header title.

As you can see from the example above, it's showing a single item representing the parish boundary layer, and multiple items for the AddressBase layer. It shows more for the AddressBase layer because that layer has multi-class styling, so is showing all possible style options.

Configuration of the Legend tool

Within the Legend tool you can:
  1. Click the title of an entry to collapse/hide the legend view.
  2. Click the "Collapse All" or "Expand All" button to show/hide all the legend options.

Legend in your Printouts

When you go into the Print tool, you'll have a Legend tick box option. This changes the configuration of the map template to leave space for a Legend.
Notes
Note: the legend will only display entries for map objects that appear within the view of your map. This is to avoid the map legend getting cluttered.
